Alejandro Cartagena
Ground Rules
Recoletos Exhibition Hall (Madrid)
Throughout his prolific career, Alejandro Cartagena—born in the Dominican Republic (1977) and based in Mexico—has built a body of work that challenges the traditional concept of the “decisive moment,” instead focusing on seriality and multiplicity of perspectives as the core of his practice. From this approach, and always through a critical and humanistic lens, his work addresses many of Mexico’s complex realities: migration, housing, the U.S. border, and urban transformation, among others.
Far from being fragmentary, Cartagena’s photography presents a coherent and multifaceted vision of contemporary challenges and invites viewers to contemplate them from multiple perspectives.
Exhibition co-produced by the San Francisco Museum of Art and Fundación Mapfre.
Curator: Shana Lopes.

Richard Avedon
In the American West
Recoletos Exhibition Hall (Madrid)
Dedicated to photography from a very young age, Richard Avedon (New York, 1923–San Antonio, Texas, 2004) excelled in the world of fashion, working for Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and other magazines, while in his personal photographic projects he addressed social and political issues such as the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War.
In the American West is the result of a commission he received from the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Texas: for five years (1979–1984), Avedon traveled throughout the western United States to photograph its inhabitants. Alone or in small groups, he portrayed miners, cowboys, carnival workers, salespeople, farmers, and others, always against a white backdrop that accentuated their features, postures, and expressions. The result was a representation of the region and its people that differed significantly from the traditional images that idealized the legend of the American West. The series became a landmark in the history of photographic portraiture and one of the defining achievements of Avedon’s career.
Exhibition organized by the Fondation Cartier-Bresson, Paris, and Fundación Mapfre, with works on loan from The Richard Avedon Foundation.
Curator: Clément Chéroux.
