Photography in Madrid and Barcelona. The vision of Derain, Balthus and Giacometti
Photography takes center stage for spring. Brassaï, the great 20th century photographer from Hungary comes to our Barcelona and Madrid exhibition halls thanks to an exceptional loan from the Estate Brassaï Succession (Paris) and other loans from some of the most important North American and European institutions and private collections. The work of Van der Elsken, the “enfant terrible” of Dutch photography, brings a touch of modernity to the Bárbara de Braganza Exhibition Hall in Madrid and in Barcelona we cover more than six decades of the life and times of Japan from the provocative perspective of the photographer Shomei Tomatsu Our Fundación MAPFRE Recoletos Exhibition Hall in Madrid is showing a collection of more than 200 works created by Derain, Balthus and Giacometti, one of the most original and representative artistic circles of the last century.

This space has given us the chance to reflect and delve deeper into the work of the brilliant Catalan artist and to find recurring motifs in his work that open up a dialogue with other works of art. For this tribute to the figure of Joan Miró, we have chosen a subject that takes center stage in his work and is also a central topic in our collections of drawings: women.

Madrid
FEB.01.2018
MAY.06.2018

From 1-6 February in our Fundación MAPFRE Recoletos Exhibition Hall in Madrid we are presenting an exhibition that explores the the friendship between three of the great artists of the 20th century: André Derain, Balthus and Alberto Giacometti. The visions of these three artists, never before contrasted, coincide in what must be demanded of a work of art. Far beyond the mutual admiration and sincere affection that bonded them throughout their lives, their profound agreement on aesthetic questions is the common thread running through this exhibition.
