With a full house, the Congress of Deputies was the venue chosen to hold the International Conference, From Vision Zero to Goal Zero?
In order to tackle the important topic of Safe Mobility we brought together national and international experts to take stock of the last 20 years of the Vision Zero movement, which began in Sweden back in 1997. According to this vision, at the same time as taking measures to avoid accidents, the road and transport systems should be built taking into account that people make mistakes and based on the ethical principle that one single fatality or seriously injured person in a road accident is unacceptable for society.
The current framework of European road safety policies are based on the focus of Vision Zero and the Safe System, and have the aim of reducing the number of deaths by 50% between 2020 and 2030. The Safe System accepts that humans make mistakes and seeks to substantially lessen the likelihood that these mistakes will lead to deaths or injuries. This is a significant reduction, but is it enough?
If the Vision Zero movement in 1997 led to a revolution in our understanding of Road Safety, the current goal should be to reach the point where there are no fatalities or people injured in road accidents.
This Conference wanted to be a turning point in order to trigger a discussion, share know-how and, guided by the experts, decide how to step up the fight against road injuries and analyze how to arrive at the ambitious Goal Zero.
This conference forms part of Fundación MAPFRE's activities carried out with the goal of ensuring that there is not even one more victim of a road traffic accident. We want you to take part in this fight to reach our goal, your goal: Goal Zero.
The speakers at the Conference represented various national and international organizations who are becoming true road safety ambassadors.
