Alianza is one of the most underprivileged neighborhoods in Tres Isletas, located within a region of deep poverty and with the largest childhood population in the area. There is no industry here. There is occasional work picking cotton and cutting down trees for the sawmill and some women work in domestic service in the center of the village. There are few economic prospects.
In this environment the Tres Isletas Community Center was set up by the Asociación de Cultura F.C. de Jesús María. It is a space created to help out the people in the neighborhood. The center offers comprehensive education, a healthy diet and professional and technical skills training to help people access the labor market. It works on enhancing the role of women in society and provides them with access to health care. The center caters to 25,000 people living in genuine need every year.
The project entitled “With education and health we can build community” supports the human and intellectual development of the inhabitants of Tres Isletas in order to rescue them from the cycle of poverty. Training courses for the village's teachers are held in order to improve the quality of education on offer and through specific courses to learn trades designed to help people gain access to employment. The center also has a health center which offers primary health care, dental services, orthopedics, ophthalmology, cardiology and ultrasound services and birth control.
Thanks to the Tres Isletas Center, the locals of Alianza have the opportunity to change their lives, not only because they can access education, but also because they learn to respect themselves, their surroundings and others. Above all, they realize just how much they are capable of doing.
