The Instituto da Infãncia (IFAN) and Fundación MAPFRE are collaborating on the project “Playgrounds” with the aim of promoting the participation of children through play, in rural areas in the northeast of Brazil which have neither suitable premises for small children nor public policies regarding childhood.
In addition to school education, the Institute believes that recreational activities complement academic ones, improving opportunities for participation and social inclusion of children in their communities.
This program is an opportunity-- in most cases a unique one-- for 400 children and their families to enjoy a fun environment that encourages them to broaden their world view during recess and school holidays. IFAN playgrounds become a meeting place and even a makeshift cultural center in the community’s festive moments, reinforcing family and community life.
IFAN was constituted in 1999 and carries out its work in the Northeast Region of Brazil. The institute encourages action focused on children and adolescents as active and competent individuals, owners of their own destinies, through social participation.
