The “School Reinsertion program for students in situations of illness” carried out by the Nuestros Hijos Foundation, with the support of Fundación MAPFRE, offers children with cancer in Santiago de Chile a complete and quality recovery attended by a multi-discipline team.
The project seeks to facilitate the children’s continuing education and reinsertion into their original schools once their medical treatments have finalized, and/or when their chronic condition has stabilized.
The Foundation carries out a follow-up of the needs of the students, their families and the schools, and offers accompaniment from the first day in the hospital, thus providing educational continuity, social participation and emotional well-being.
The objective of this project is to educate children and adolescents who are left out of the Chilean school system because of their medical condition, and to give them home schooling by professionals trained in working with students whose illness confines them to their homes.
The project also backs the social inclusion of the youngsters and helps them overcome the difficulties, arising from their medical treatment and its after-effects, in accessing work.
The Nuestros Hijos Foundation was formed in 1991 by a group of parents who lived the experience of having a child suffer cancer. Since then, it has worked to offer a quality and free service for children who are sick with cancer, from families of limited means.
