The “Development of extremely poor families with children at high risk” program, of the Fundacion Amanecer Infantil, takes care of nearly one hundred children in the southern region of the Dominican Republic, in collaboration with Fundación MAPFRE. This initiative offers psychological and legal services, protection, and special education support to children as well as employment and training to their families in order to overcome serious situations.
The Fundacion Amanecer Infantil works in a rural and depressed area of Barahona, which suffers high rates of school drop-out, infant abandonment and mortality, child labor, malnutrition, unemployment and domestic violence. Here, numerous families end up in a legal vacuum because their existence is not recorded on any official register. Many children suffer abuse and situations of abandonment or semi–abandonment.
The Fundacion Amanecer Infantil, a Spanish NGO, was founded in 2007 to provide comprehensive attention to children of high risk between birth and six years of age in the Dominican Republic. The foundation works with the children through their Child Care Centre, and at the same time, works with the parents to ensure they give their children the attention they need.
