Completed Project

Receiving a diagnosis of cancer disrupts the lives of children and young people suffering this disease, as well as those of their families, as most of their time is spent undergoing medical tests, attending doctor’s appointments, having operations and other clinical procedures.

In addition, many of these patients have to travel from their home community in another state in the country to Mexico City to receive the necessary medical care. This means that they are away from their family, school and friends for days, weeks or even months at a time.

The Casa de la Amistad para Niños con Cáncer offers the patient, and their primary caregiver, support for access to medications and treatments, study, and also housing, transportation and food throughout their oncological experience.

The people who join this initiative are incorporated into a learning community. This sense of community that develops among the cancer patients who benefit from this project demonstrates that supporting others and establishing strong ties with important figures within the community itself has a positive impact on the patients’ quality of life.

The direct beneficiaries are involved in educational, emotional and psychosocial activities, all of which are part of a biopsychosocial care model based on a holistic and empowering perspective that recognizes the need to engage with users in their own personal stories.
