Winogrand investigaba. No le interesaban las fotografías que reconocía, necesitaba encontrar “las otras”. La leyenda cuenta que salía todos los días a la calle con su Leica, un objetivo gran angular, y diez rollos de Tri-X. Volvía a casa con Nueva York en los bolsillos. Su particular encuadre (torcido, respondía a un eje alternativo al horizontal) y su dominio del gran angular hacen de sus fotografías composiciones que funcionan con la precisión de un reloj, donde cada personaje secundario, cada sombra, tiene un sentido y está ahí con un propósito. Velocidad siempre, azar, el justo. En Winogrand no hay nada frívolo pero tampoco hay nada erudito. Todo tiene el sentido exacto. Las fotografías no son discursos, son forma, momento, instante. Meter la realidad en el encuadre y disparar. Revelar. Positivar. Ver contactos; imprimir. Ése es el viaje completo de Winogrand, el que comenzaba cada mañana, con su Leica, los bolsillos llenos de película virgen, las calles a sus pies.
