Europe, a project that unites millions of people
We are celebrating Europe Day by looking back at where we have come from and toward our shared future

“Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity.”
Robert Schuman, French Minister of Foreign Affairs. May 9, 1950.
Forty years ago, Spain joined the European project with one hope: to construct a future of peace, progress, and opportunities. Since then, over these four decades, Europe has become part of our country’s daily life, decisively influencing social, economic, and territorial development.
That is why, on May 9, Europe Day, we encourage you to look back and reflect on the journey we have taken as a society—a journey that today allows us to share an identity with 447 million people.
Putting people first, always
The European project is most meaningful when we listen, support, and respond to society’s real needs; when we reaffirm that people are the priority, always.
Talking about Europe means talking about inclusion, employment, well-being, and a shared future. The project we have built together leaves no one behind and views progress as something collective, accessible, and part of everyday life.
Taking concrete action
In Spain, the European Union is present where it is needed most: boosting employment, strengthening social inclusion, supporting rural areas, and promoting territorial cohesion.
Its presence is felt when a person improves their employability, when social entities strengthen their capacity to act, or when a local initiative finds the support it needs to move forward. Through each of these actions, Europe ceases to be an abstract idea and becomes a tangible reality.
A social impact that makes a difference
Since Spain joined the European Union, the focus on social cohesion and equal opportunities has been a cornerstone of the European project.
At Fundación Mapfre, we share this vision and, as an ESF+ intermediary body, we strive to ensure that this social Europe—committed to well-being and inclusion—is translated into concrete actions. Through our work, we help translate European priorities into action on the ground, transforming them into initiatives with real and measurable impact.
A living common project
Europe is built every day, thanks to the partnerships that unite us, our shared commitment, and a steadfast dedication to service. That is why, on Europe Day this year, we are renewing our commitment to keep working on everything that unites us and everything we have yet to build together.
