Each year, on April 29, European Day of Solidarity between Generations reminds us how important it is to promote an inclusive society where everyone, no matter their age, can find their place, and different generations can learn from one another, share responsibilities, and build a common future together.

This date was established in 2009 on the initiative of various organizations, including the European Older People’s Platform and the European Youth Forum, concerned about the ageing population and the social challenges it poses.

In rural areas, although there are still significant challenged related to ageing and depopulation, the concept of community has always been the cornerstone of social cohesion. This is why more and more young families are returning to or settling in rural areas, attracted by a sustainable lifestyle and, above all, by the possibility of living differently and building social connections that enrich their lives.

It is this vital exchange between young and old that boosts intergenerational solidarity. Older people, with their wisdom, pass on values linked to the land, the climate, and their experiences. Young people, on the other hand, contribute innovation, new energy, and a fresh and different outlook on life. The combination of the two creates opportunities for everyone.

The solution to the demographic challenge and unwanted loneliness lies in cultivating human bonds that make towns and villages places where people want to stay and go back to.

On this European Day of Intergenerational Solidarity, we are reminded that the progress of a society is not measured solely by technological advances, but also by the ability of its members to move forward together.

At Fundación MAPFRE, and within the framework of the European Social Fund Plus, we are committed to rural development by financing projects that generate opportunities and improve the lives of rural residents.
