The idea of paiting a series of frescos at the monastery of Santa María de La Rábida had been on Daniel Vázquez Díaz’s mind since 1925 and matured through hundreds of sketches. The first sketches were presented in May of 1927 during an exhibition at the Palacio de Bibliotecas y Museos in Madrid [Palace of Libraries and Museums]. He made several trips to Huelva and La Rábida to convey the importance of his artistic project to his fellow townspeople and on October 12, 1929 he moved to La Rábida in order to begin his work.
This canvas corresponds to one of his initial trips in 1927 when he visited Palos de Moguer with the idea of painting further murals at the Church of Santa Clara in Moguer and at the Chruch of Saint George in Palos.
His style was close to the work of Paul Cézanne and André Derain, and similar to the paintings Picasso produced while he was staying in Horta de Ebro for a second time in 1909, during the onset of Cubism. The church and the bell tower of Palos de Moguer appear in one of the frescoes of La Rábida: Los heroicos hijos de Palos y Moguer [The Heroic Sons of Palos and Moguer] from an identical perspective to the one used in this painting.
