When generations come together, society moves forward

In Spain, life expectancy is steadily rising, and this reality presents an opportunity that the European Day of Solidarity and Cooperation between Generations invites us to remember: life flourishes when different generations come together and work side by side.

A great example of this is rural Spain, where older people have never been the past, but rather the roots. And young people are not just the future, but continuity. By learning together and working together, skills are strengthened, knowledge is shared, and, above all, prejudices are broken down, helping to build a more empathetic and cohesive society.

Today, that same spirit is also being carried into new spaces. One example of this is the TaleS program, proof that collaboration between different generations is still key. Thanks to this initiative, people over 50 develop their ideas while connecting and working with young entrepreneurs, generating a meaningful exchange of knowledge, experience, and new ways of seeing the world.

These types of initiatives pave the way for a new way of living together. Because this is not about choosing between one group or the other, but about understanding that we work better together. Experience brings perspective, judgment, and a track record. Youth drives, questions, and blazes trails. And when the two come together, stronger projects emerge, but so do more human relationships.

In a fast-paced world, we turn our gaze to rural Spain as a return to grass roots, to places where it has always been understood that no one learns alone and that no one should be left behind—to solidarity, to the common good.

This is why, at Fundación Mapfre, as an Intermediate Body within the framework of the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) Program for Social Inclusion, Child Guarantee, and the Fight Against Poverty, we are working hard to support initiatives that touch people of all ages living in rural areas, with no exceptions. Because together, we make a bigger impact, and when we all look in the same direction, society moves forward.
