Increased life expectancy is one of the greatest achievements of our time. However, this progress also presents significant social, economic and organizational challenges that require innovative, sustainable and people-centered responses. These challenges are particularly pressing in rural areas.

The approval of the new Dependency Law marks a milestone in the evolution of our social protection system and provides an opportunity to reflect on one of the greatest challenges facing European societies: how to respond to the impact of an ageing population while ensuring appropriate care for people in situations of dependency. Ensuring equal opportunities regardless of where people live is essential to social and territorial cohesion.

As an intermediary body for the ESF+ Program for Social Inclusion, Child Guarantee and the Fight against Poverty, Fundación Mapfre promotes projects that help build more inclusive, resilient and sustainable communities. We also strive to ensure that these challenges are part of the public debate by creating spaces for dialogue where public authorities, social organizations, experts and institutional representatives can share knowledge, identify priorities and promote innovative responses to complex issues.

With this objective in mind, on October 29, Fundación Mapfre will be holding the meeting “Longevity and dependency: demographic challenges, public policies, and European best practices”. The meeting will bring together representatives of European institutions, public authorities, social organizations and experts in the field of care to examine the scope of regulatory changes, the challenges associated with an ageing population, and experiences that are helping to improve access to long-term care, with a particular focus on rural areas.

The meeting will also explore the role of social organizations in providing support, fostering social innovation and developing solutions that improve people’s quality of life.

Because at Fundación Mapfre, we believe longevity and dependency are strategic issues that affect the sustainability of our welfare model and territorial cohesion.
