Dana Lixenberg

American Images

KBr Photography Center, Fundación Mapfre (Barcelona)

The photography of Dana Lixenberg (Amsterdam, 1964) has gained international recognition for its honest and committed approach to documentary portraiture. Over more than three decades, she has developed a deeply human body of work focused on the representation of marginalized communities, iconic figures in popular culture, and social landscapes imbued with memory. Produced primarily in the United States, her work is characterized by a refined aesthetic, an empathetic gaze, and a consistent effort to avoid stereotypes.

American Images offers an in-depth perspective on contemporary American society through a selection of her most significant projects. From the emblematic Imperial Courts, initiated after the Los Angeles riots in 1992, to portraits made in Jeffersonville (Indiana) and Shishmaref (Alaska), Lixenberg has captured the essence of humanity in diverse and complex contexts. Her portraits do more than depict faces; they tell stories of inequality, identity, and resilience.

Exhibition organized by Fundación Mapfre and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP).

Curators: Laurie Hurwitz and Marcel Feil.

KBr Flama’26

KBr Photography Center, Fundación Mapfre (Barcelona)

The KBr Photography Center of Fundación Mapfre presents the sixth edition of its annual showcase dedicated to emerging photographers who are beginning their professional careers after completing their training in Barcelona. This year’s exhibition brings together works by Sara Bravo (Girona, 1999), Elena Bulet i Llopis (Barcelona, 1997), Meghan Mathews (Winston-Salem, Carolina del Norte, 1995), and Luca Gaetano Pira (Modena, 1987), selected by a jury composed of Roser Cambray, Carles Guerra, and Cristina de Middel.

The four projects share a common impulse: starting from personal experience to engage with reflections of universal relevance. The works address issues such as the struggle for and visibility of the LGBTIQA+ community through documentary language and staged photography, as well as the role of family heritage in shaping relationships and constructing memory.

Curator: Carolina Ciuti.
