Anders Zorn

Traveling the World, Remembering the Land

Recoletos Exhibition Hall (Madrid)

Anders Zorn (1860–1920) was one of the most prominent Swedish painters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born into a humble background, he achieved international fame as a portraitist, painting kings, presidents, and celebrities of his time. His virtuoso technique in oil, watercolor, and etching, as well as his celebrated nudes, established him as a European artist of considerable prestige.

The exhibition traces his career from his early watercolors and years in England to Paris, where he consolidated his reputation and was influenced by French Impressionism. His travels to the United States allowed him to portray the opulence of the Gilded Age, while upon returning to Mora, his birthplace, he focused on the everyday life of Sweden’s inhabitants. The exhibition also includes his Spanish works, created in Seville, Cádiz, and Granada, as well as the imprint of his friendship with Joaquín Sorolla.

Helen Levitt

Recoletos Exhibition Hall (Madrid)

Over more than seven decades, Helen Levitt (1913–2009) developed one of the most personal and poetic visions of urban life in the twentieth century. Fascinated by the vitality of New York’s streets, she began photographing them in the late 1930s, capturing an inexhaustible source of inspiration in children’s games, everyday gestures, and scenes from the city’s working-class neighborhoods. Her talent was recognized early: in 1943, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York held her first solo exhibition. In parallel, her work extended into film, approached from a documentary perspective.

Renowned for her social commitment, Helen Levitt was also among the first women to establish a professional career in photography. The exhibition brings together nearly two hundred works across nine sections, offering a comprehensive overview of her career and the singular vision of the world she developed throughout her life.
