Description

Atget photographed the «old Paris», the parts of the city that the grand modernization (and demolition) project had not yet reached, a plan which was undertaken in the 1850s by Baron Haussman to create a more modern and spacious city. Atget preferred to take photographs of streets and buildings without featuring any passers-by. He used an 18 x 24 plate camera which enabled him to pick up on the most minute details of the architecture. He produced a huge body of work (10,000 plates and thousands more copies). This vast documentary archive depicted a popular Paris, without the middle classes and free from the fantasies of the Ancien Régime, on the fringes of the Belle Époque. Atget’s Paris was a melting pot of documents of French civilization made up of everyday details: the interiors of houses, street stalls, taverns, gardens…etc., a city that presented a qualitative cultural difference and which revealed the spirit of French culture in a visual way, running parallel to the task undertaken by Balzac in The Human Comedy.

Atget’s all-consuming desire to «have all of the old Paris in his power», links him to the encyclopedic spirit of the 18th century, while his way of working, with a plate camera and with copies for contact proofs, ideally on albumin paper, make him the natural successor of the photographers of the 19th century. However, his photographic vision was strikingly modern, as stated by the philosopher Walter Benjamin in the 1930s.

Atget’s work is crucial to our understanding of 20th century photography as is the history of his critical acclaim. Together with the recent popularity of documentary photography and young artists and photographers’ interest in depicting cities, his work appears more modern than ever. For this reason, Fundación MAPFRE staged the most important retrospective of his work in Spain in 2011, with the exhibition later traveling to the Nederland Fotomuseum in Rotterdam, the Museé Carnavalet in Paris and to South New Gales in Sydney, thereby making it possible for new generations to see first hand and for the first time in their own countries this unique photographer who made such a fundamental contribution to the history of photography.
