“Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity.”

This is how Robert Schuman, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, referred to the proposal to create a common higher authority to manage Franco-German coal and steel, which was immediately embraced by four other countries. It was May 9, 1950. The Schuman Declaration was the first step toward a dream that seemed impossible: to unite European countries and develop a common project based on peace and solidarity. Today, 75 years later, the spirit that inspired this declaration is more important than ever.

On May 9 each year, Europeans celebrate the progress we have made, our common history, and our commitment to a shared future. Europe Day is therefore a unique opportunity to reflect on everything that unites us and on the fundamental pillars of the Europe we want to build.

In the current context, where we face humanitarian, social and economic challenges, and where a war on our continent reminds us that peace is never fully assured, we call for a more humane Europe. A Europe that leaves no one behind; where social stakeholders work together to advance the fight against poverty and discrimination; where equality and justice are a reality for all.
