Paul Durand-Ruel and the Twilight of Impressionism

As well as being a gallery owner and collector, Paul Durand-Ruel (Paris, 1831-1922) was one of the most important art dealers of the French cultural scene who dedicated a large part of his life to the protection and defense of modern art. In this publication, in addition to an introduction to the figure of Paul Durand-Ruel and his innovative working methods (bulk purchasing an artist’s production, monthly income and support at auctions and through the organization of solo and group exhibitions in his galleries), we discuss his professional and personal relationship with the five featured artists: Henry Moret, Maxime Maufra, Gustave Loiseau, Georges d’Espagnat and Albert Andrè.
