José Gutiérrez Solana was one of the most unique figures in Spanish art during the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. A painter, writer and engraver, his prolific production offers a vision that links with the idea of Black Spain, along a path that starts with the Spanish tradition of the Golden Age and continues with Francisco Goya to reach its apogee in 1898. This catalog, with texts by María Dolores Jiménez-Blanco and Leyre Bozal Chamorro, includes Solana’s works that are included in the Fundación MAPFRE Collections, offering a broad overview of the author and new perspectives on his life and work.
