When he turned 20, Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta (1841-1920) traveled to Paris to complete his artistic training. There, he initially devoted himself to genre painting, producing works that fetched high prices on the international art market due to the splendor of his brilliant interiors and his skill as a colorist. From the mid-1870s onwards, he gradually moved into portraiture and eventually became one of the favorite portraitists of Parisian and American high society. During the 1870s and 1880s, he produced several iconic works in this genre, masterful examples of cosmopolitan distinction and refinement.
This catalog brings together the works included in the exhibition Raimundo de Madrazo. It is intended not only to remedy the lack of knowledge about this brilliant artist, but also to restore his legacy to its rightful place in art history.
