+RuralTEA: Program to improve access and services for people with autism in rural areas

Main project goals
+RuralTEA’s main objective is to ensure equal access to services for people with autism living in rural municipalities. The project also seeks to strengthen community support networks and create more inclusive rural environments by raising social awareness and promoting coordination between social organizations and local authorities.
Description of the target group
The project is aimed at people with autism, a neurodevelopmental condition that creates challenges related to social communication and cognitive flexibility, making personalized support essential.
In rural areas, the barriers experienced by people with autism are exacerbated by factors such as depopulation, geographical remoteness, a lack of specialized services, and mobility difficulties. This interaction between autism and living in a rural setting increases the risk of late diagnosis, reduced access to support, and social isolation, justifying the need to bring specific resources to the area and ensure equal access to services.
Expected improvements or impacts
+RuralTEA aims to generate tangible improvements in the quality of life of people with autism—through individualized support plans—and their families, facilitating a better work-life balance. At the regional level, it is expected to help boost social and regional cohesion, making it easier for people with autism to remain in their municipalities, strengthening rural areas by promoting inclusive attitudes and consolidating local networks.
