Current Project

School-age patients at El Carmen de Maipú Hospital suffering from chronic illnesses, severe neurological damage, eating disorders and mental health issues require specialized care. Their health problems, combined with their socio-economic vulnerability, make it difficult for them to remain in the education system.

For eight years, the hospital school has been the cornerstone of ensuring the right to education for these patients, children and young people between the ages of 4 and 26 who live in the communities of Maipú and Cerrillos, in the Santiago Metropolitan Region. Through specialized care, the center provides education at the preschool, elementary, and secondary levels, as well as special education. Three methods are used to adapt the teaching to the specific needs of each student: Classroom (patients receiving outpatient treatment attend face-to-face classes); Home (for students hospitalized at home); and Bedside (for those who are hospitalized and cannot attend classes in person).

Fundación MAPFRE supports this project to strengthen the teaching process and respond to the needs of these students by training teachers in new educational tools and strategies. We also provide ongoing psychological care and supply the necessary materials for emotional support workshops for students, their families, and the educational community in general.

The project Improving the Present, Consciously Preparing for the Future, which impacts the lives of 395 direct beneficiaries, including the students, their families, and their teachers, offers individualized training that not only adapts to the students’ current health conditions but also prepares them for the future.

The project Improving the Present, Consciously Preparing for the Future ensures education and comprehensive support for students who are ill or vulnerable, promoting their inclusion and development.
