Gasparini projects a somewhat sarcastic gaze over the supporters of Venezuelan conservative politician Rafael Caldera, cheered on in luxurious cars through the streets of Caracas during the electoral campaign. Caldera won the elections in his country in 1969, the year after this photograph was taken.
Photography has always been the voice through which Gasparini has expressed his political commitment. Between 1968 and 1970 he collaborated on the magazine Rocinante with other intellectuals. During those years, once the armed conflict had been overcome and some of the leftist militants had been integrated into State institutions, the population maintained critical view on the oil companies, North American imperialism, and the corruption of electoral processes.
Close to photojournalism, Gasparini’s style captures city life on the fly; compositions are frequently supported by diagonal lines providing great dynamism to the scenes, such as in this image. Most of his series constitute urban symphonies comprised of architectural backdrops, businesses, street characters, middle class people, and beggars.
