Previous editions of the Fundación MAPFRE Awards

Since their creation, our Fundación MAPFRE Social Outreach Awards have recognized individuals and organizations that stand out for their commitment to improving the quality of life of the most vulnerable groups in our society.

Year after year, with a few inevitable exceptions, these awards have highlighted exemplary careers and charitable initiatives that have contributed significantly to building a better society for everyone.

Our award winners are an example of how, through effort, generosity and the will to transform the present, it is possible to build a more humane future.

2024 Social Outreach Awards

Every year, our Social Outreach Awards recognize the work of individuals and organizations that are aware of the need to work together to create opportunities where there are none, support the most vulnerable, and make our society fairer and more inclusive. We present the 2024 award winners.

Núria Espert

The José Manuel Martínez Martínez Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to actress, stage director, and Honorary Member of the Spanish Academy of Performing Arts, Núria Espert, one of the most influential and respected figures in theater both in Spain and internationally. Her career has been defined by a courageous and socially committed attitude.

In addition to her talent as an artist, the award recognizes her unwavering dedication to the arts and her advocacy for various humanitarian causes.

Moda re-

Moda re-, a social cooperative supported by Cáritas, received the Award for the Project or Initiative with the Best Social Impact. This initiative transforms the management of used clothing into an opportunity for social and environmental change, generating inclusive employment, ensuring the ethical destination of clothing, and promoting the circular economy by opening second-hand stores.

This award recognizes its commitment to sustainability and inclusion.

Special Olympics

The Award for the Entity with the Best Track Record in Social Causes was given to Special Olympics, an organization that makes sports accessible to five million people with intellectual disabilities in 177 countries through 227 programs and the largest volunteer network in the world. It also organizes the Special Olympics World Games every two years, in which more than 7,000 athletes from around the world participate.

Our award recognizes its ability to transform lives and break stereotypes.

Cárnicas Joselito

The Award for the Best Initiative in the Agricultural Sector, presented every two years, recognizes innovative initiatives aimed at improving quality control and safety standards in their production chain, optimizing the use of resources, and ensuring long-term sustainability.

Cárnicas Joselito is an example of commitment to sustainability, the development of the circular economy, and research applied to healthy and ecological production.

2023 Social Outreach Awards

There are many people and organizations around us who dedicate their lives to making this world a better place. Whether through their professional work or their private lives, their dedication influences our society and their example encourages us to keep working. Once again, Fundación MAPFRE recognizes their dedication through our Social Outreach Awards.

Carlos Sainz Cenamor

The José Manuel Martínez Martínez Lifetime Achievement Award recognized the career of Carlos Sainz, two-time world rally champion and three-time Dakar champion. His career spanning more than thirty years in the world of motor racing has been marked by his charisma, spirit of self-improvement, and capacity for hard work and discipline.

In addition to his professional achievements, this award highlights his solidarity, his constant support for young drivers, and his commitment to various social causes.

BrazilFoundation

The Award for the Entity with the Best Track Record in Social Causes recognized the important role played by this institution, which since 2000 has been addressing social needs in Brazil through a global support network that promotes equality, socio-environmental justice, and opportunities.

This award recognizes a model of action that mobilizes resources from different sectors to invest in transformative actions, generating a systemic and democratic socio-environmental impact.

“Development of the Suicide Attempt Intervention Unit” of the Madrid City Council Fire Department

The main goal of the Madrid City Council Fire Department is to save lives. That is why, among other actions, they set up a suicide prevention service to act in extreme situations, and this earned them our Award for the Project or Initiative with the Best Social Impact.

“This service, unique in the world, takes a comprehensive approach to the specific methodology and coordination with other services involved in rescuing individuals in suicidal crisis.”

Pilar González de Frutos, for her work “The necessary reform of supplementary social protection in Spain”

The 11th Julio Castelo Matrán International Insurance Award, presented every two years, honored the work of Pilar González de Frutos, a law graduate from the Autonomous University of Madrid and State Insurance Inspector. In it, the author focuses on the need for supplementary social protection systems which, together with state pensions, enable people to maintain their consumption patterns and an adequate standard of living after retirement.

This award recognizes the value of her analysis, which facilitates the adoption of proposals to boost economic growth and improve competitiveness.

2022 Social Outreach Awards

Once again, our awards have focused on individuals and organizations that refuse to compromise, that act with conviction and work every day to build a fairer and more inclusive world. Through their commitment and solidarity, they enable us all to remain hopeful despite war, inequality and injustice.

Carolina Herrera

Carolina Herrera is a leading name in contemporary fashion. But she has also dedicated years to various humanitarian causes, including her tireless support for children’s welfare, gender equality, women’s empowerment, and the fight against breast cancer.

Her professional merit, values, and social commitment have made her worthy of our José Manuel Martínez Martínez Lifetime Achievement Award.

Fundación Integra

The Award for the Entity with the Best Track Record in Social Causes went to Fundación Integra for its commitment to the social inclusion and workplace integration of people suffering from severe social exclusion and disabilities. Its goal is to help these individuals reach their full potential through decent employment that allows them to regain their independence, self-esteem, and sense of purpose.

This award recognizes the foundation’s core mission, which is to help each of these individuals take control of their present and future through employment.

Doctors Without Borders

The Award for the Project or Initiative with the Best Social Impact went to Doctors Without Borders (DWB) in Ukraine, which used a medical train to transfer patients from overcrowded hospitals near the front line to hospitals in the west with greater capacity and further from the conflict zone.

This initiative, developed in collaboration with Ukrainian Railways and the country’s Ministry of Health, earned our recognition for its creativity in adapting to a difficult environment as well as the courage it demonstrated.

Bodega Matarromera

Every two years, we present the Award for the Best Initiative in the Agricultural Sector, which on this occasion went to Bodega Matarromera, one of the leading companies on the national and international wine scene.

In addition to its strong commitment to the Spanish agri-food sector, the award highlights its social work through the Carlos Moro de Matarromera Foundation, which is dedicated to improving people’s quality of life, protecting the planet through sustainable practices, and promoting entrepreneurship and development in rural areas.

2020 Social Outreach Awards

In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic forced us to suspend the awards so we could focus our efforts on alleviating the consequences of the health, social, and economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.  That is why, in 2021, we relaunched our Social Outreach Awards with even greater enthusiasm to highlight the vital work carried out every day by individuals and institutions from different fields who are committed to putting their time, talent, and energy at the service of others.

Raphael

No introduction is needed when talking about Raphael. His long and tireless artistic career is recognized worldwide. Through the José Manuel Martínez Martínez Lifetime Achievement Award, we wanted to recognize a lesser-known side of Rafael Martos Sánchez, his very human and caring side.

This award recognizes his commitment to culture and his participation in various campaigns run by social entities, as well as his active role in supporting homeless people through the Mensajeros de la Paz Association.

ONCE social group

The Award for the Entity with the Best Track Record in Social Causes was given to Grupo Social ONCE. Recognized as a Unique Social Economy Organization since 1939, with the first “prociegos” charity lottery ticket draw, this non-profit organization has made great strides in the social inclusion of blind people and people with other disabilities.

Its international work, especially in Latin America and the European Union, to boost access to decent work and economic independence for millions of people with disabilities makes it highly deserving of this award.

Fundación Juanfe

Fundación Juanfe received the Award for the Project or Initiative with the Best Social Impact for its work with teenage mothers in Colombia, the country with the third highest rate of teenage pregnancy in Latin America. Through its 360º social development model, which integrates education, psychosocial support, and decent employment, this organization has enabled many teenage mothers to become self-sufficient, independent women.

This award recognizes its sustained impact on communities and families and its capacity to expand to other countries.

Abel B. Veiga, for his work “Insurance and Technology: The Impact of Digitalization on Insurance Contracts”.

The X Julio Castelo Matrán International Insurance Award, a biennial prize, was awarded to Abel B. Veiga, a professor of insurance and commercial law at Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid, for a study examining how the Insurtech phenomenon and technology are profoundly affecting the insurance sector in this transitional phase between the traditional and the digital.

This work stands out for its significant academic and practical contribution to understanding the challenges posed by digitalization in the field of law.

2018 Social Outreach Awards

Once again, our Social Outreach Awards have recognized the commitment, generosity, and solidarity of individuals and institutions for their outstanding contributions to society in the scientific, cultural, and social spheres.

We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2018 awards, selected from a total of 681 entries from Europe, the United States, Latin America, Africa, and Asia

Emilio Aragón

Storyteller, musician, and presenter, Emilio Aragón is known for his artistic talent, but he received the José Manuel Martínez Martínez Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his humanity, his support for social organizations that fight hunger and poverty, and his promotion of inclusive education and the use of music as a tool for integration.

A member of several foundations, he collaborates with Action Against Hunger, for which he has conducted campaigns and made documentaries in affected areas.

This award highlights his social commitment, as well as his ability to lead by example and use his values to help others.

Mary’s Meals

The Award for the Entity with the Best Track Record in Social Causes went to Mary’s Meals, an organization founded in Scotland in 2002 that provides a daily meal in schools in some of the poorest and most needy places on the planet, with the aim of making the classroom an attractive place for children suffering from chronic hunger.

This award recognizes their effective work in guaranteeing education and nutrition for millions of schoolchildren, supporting local economies, and demonstrating that commitment and the support of thousands of volunteers are effective tools in the fight against hunger.

Cirugía en Turkana

The Award for the Project or Initiative with the Best Social Impact went to Cirugía en Turkana, a project that began in 2004 when five general surgeons from the Ramón y Cajal Hospital traveled to northern Kenya, near Lake Turkana, to help alleviate the shortage of surgeons in local hospitals. In 2018, a hundred doctors, both local and Spanish, helped 836 patients in clinics and performed 260 procedures.

The most outstanding aspects of this project are the team’s passion, their focus on local development, and their commitment to medicine as a tool for change.

Agrindus SA

Agrindus SA is one of Brazil’s three largest milk producers. Its pioneering A2A2 milk production project, a natural and more digestible alternative for people who are intolerant to conventional milk, earned it the Award for the Best Initiative in the Agricultural Sector, a prize we give every two years to the best initiatives in this field.

The award also recognizes the care that the company devotes to its surroundings, from both the environmental and social perspectives, participating in the education and employability of those most in need, as well as in the development of the region.

2017 Social Outreach Awards

Dedicating a great deal of effort, and sometimes their entire lives, to improving the lives of others is what defines the people and organizations recognized each year by our Social Outreach Awards. The 2017 award winners are a shining example of this dedication and generosity.

Vicente del Bosque

The José Manuel Martínez Martínez Lifetime Achievement Award recognized Vicente del Bosque for his social commitment beyond the world of sport. Through his work in solidarity projects, he has contributed to research into rare diseases, supported people with Down syndrome, and collaborated with organizations including Save the Children and environmental projects.

This award recognizes his social commitment, particularly to protecting children and improving the living conditions of young people.

Fundación EHAS

The “Healthy Pregnancy” program run by Fundación EHAS in Guatemala received the Award for Best Health Promotion Initiative. The aim of this program is to reduce maternal and infant mortality in rural areas where there is little or no healthcare. Thanks to an innovative portable prenatal care kit and nurse training programs, this foundation has managed to bring healthcare to isolated communities.

The award highlights the project’s ability to provide quality reproductive healthcare through technology and training.

Dentista do Bem

The Award for Best Social Action Initiative went to the Brazilian project O Dentista do Bem, a network of volunteers comprising 17,100 dental surgeons who treat low-income children and young people aged between 11 and 17 in their clinics. They also treat women who are victims of violence, for which they were recognized by the UN, which also provides institutional support to the project.

The scope of the project is particularly noteworthy in a country where 40 million people do not visit the dentist because they cannot afford to.

Organización de Bomberos Americanos

The American firefighters organization, the Organización de Bomberos Americanos (OBA) received the Award for the Best Accident Prevention Initiative for its international cooperation and training of thousands of firefighters in 37 countries in the Americas, both in person and through its Virtual Academy. It has also been instrumental in standardizing emergency prevention and response procedures and protocols in the regions where it operates.

This award recognizes its efforts to reduce risk through community awareness and the professionalization of local fire departments.

Wharton Risk Management Policy Incubator Project

The Julio Castelo Matrán International Insurance Award was given to the Policy Incubator project from the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center (University of Pennsylvania). Their proposal is a “policy incubator” where experts from different disciplines and sectors work on the design and implementation of public policies in the field of insurance.

This award recognizes their efforts to bridge the gap between research and public policy design to expand access to insurance in disadvantaged regions, which also happen to be emerging markets, thereby helping to increase resilience to natural disasters.

2016 Social Outreach Awards

Our Social Outreach Awards were set up to recognize individuals and organizations that selflessly dedicate their lives to improving the lives of others. Once again this year, the example set by our award winners will inspire us all to work together to make our society more inclusive and supportive.

Dr. Valentín Fuster

The José Manuel Martínez Martínez Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to Dr. Valentín Fuster Carulla for his dedication to scientific research, particularly his work on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, one of the most common diseases in today’s society.

This award recognizes his contribution to science, particularly his research into how the heart works and the treatment of heart conditions.

Project HELP by Dr. Rojas Marcos

Project HELP, conceptualized and directed by Dr. Rojas Marcos, received the Award for Best Initiative in Health Promotion. It is the first mobile service made up of psychiatrists, nursing professionals, and social workers, designed to care for and hospitalize the seriously mentally ill, destitute, and homeless who wander the streets of New York.

This model has been replicated in the US and Europe. In Spain, it operates in regions including Madrid, Catalonia, the Basque Country, Malaga, and Valencia.

Alsa Grupo, SLU

The Award for Best Accident Prevention Initiative was given to the “World Class Driver” project, part of the “Eliminating Risks” program run by ALSA GRUPO, SLU. Through this project, the company, which specializes in passenger transport, set out to improve the skills of its staff by implementing, monitoring, and following up on improvement measures.

Thanks to everyone’s commitment and effort, the company has managed to reduce accidents by 31%.

Fundación Aladina

Fundación Aladina was awarded the Award for Best Social Action Initiative for its “Psychological Care Program for Children and Young People with Cancer and Their Families”, a daily volunteering program that aims to make the stay in hospital more bearable for children and their families by offering personalized psychological care. The foundation collaborates with a total of twelve hospitals in Spain.  Some of the most notable projects include renovations and improvements made to public hospitals to help make the stay more comfortable for patients and their families.

2015 Social Outreach Awards

In a world increasingly in need of commitment and action, the work carried out by individuals and organizations committed to collective well-being is crucial. Our Social Outreach Awards were set up to recognize their constant dedication and firm determination to transform reality.

Her Majesty Queen Sofía

Her Majesty Queen Sofía was awarded the José Manuel Martínez Martínez Lifetime Achievement Award, for her commitment to promoting harmony and coexistence and supporting the most disadvantaged. She is actively involved in social and international causes, with a special focus on children and women. Her work on projects aimed at the development of rural women and the expansion of microcredit is particularly noteworthy. This award recognizes her exemplary dedication to public service and her promotion of democratic values.

FEVR

Since its creation in 1991, FEVR (the European Federation of Road Traffic Victims) has been defending the rights of road accident victims and improving road safety. This work earned it the Award for Best Accident Prevention and Road Safety Initiative.

This award recognizes the Federation’s track record as well as its latest project, “Let’s not forget the serious victims of traffic accidents”, which aims to ensure that prevention efforts focus not only on fatalities but also on the people who are seriously injured.

Action Against Hunger

The Award for the Best Health Promotion Initiative was presented to the Action Against Hunger Foundation. Childhood anemia profoundly affects the neural and cognitive development of children between the ages of zero and three, thereby perpetuating the cycle of poverty. This program trains female community leaders to improve nutrition in communities in Peru’s Central Highlands thanks to local crops that offer more nutritious varieties and pre-Columbian techniques for preparing and preserving iron-rich foods.

Fundación Promoción Social de la Cultura

The Award for the Best Social Action Initiative was given to the Fundación Promoción Social de la Cultura (FPSC) for its project “Protection and humanitarian assistance for Syrian refugees with disabilities in the Za’Atari refugee camp (Jordan)”.

There, the FPSC runs a clinic specializing in physical therapy and rehabilitation services for refugees with disabilities, mainly children with cerebral palsy, offering treatment and psychosocial services, medicine, and technical aids (from canes and crutches to wheelchairs and orthopedic devices).

Ohio Insurance Institute

The Ohio Insurance Institute is an employers’ association of insurance and reinsurance companies that brings together more than forty US and international organizations. The Julio Castelo Matrán International Insurance Award, which we present every two years, recognizes their initiative to promote job opportunities in the insurance field through a website (https://insurancecareers.org/) aimed at students, military veterans, and professionals who want to change careers.
