31 Women. An Exhibition by Peggy Guggenheim

In 1943, at her New York gallery Art of This Century, the art collector and patron of the arts Peggy Guggenheim organised one of the first exhibitions in the United States to feature works entirely by women, both European and American, entitled Exhibition by 31 Women. One of Guggenheim’s objectives was to highlight the contribution of women artists, who were often dismissed by the patriarchal outlook of the time as muses, imitators or companions of famous male artists. This catalogue, published to accompany the exhibition 31 Women: An Exhibition by Peggy Guggenheim organised by Fundación MAPFRE, brings together a selection and reinterpretation of that initiative, including works by all the artists who were present at the historic show.
