The Fundación Nuestros Hijos, with the support of Fundación MAPFRE, cares for children with cancer at the Exequiel González Cortés Hospital in de Santiago de Chile. The “School Reinsertion program for students in situations of illness” seeks to offer patients a complete and quality recovery attended by a multi-discipline team.
An occupational therapist and a psychologist care for the patients on the basis of their specific needs. The project also covers the purchase of medical materials, as well as the attendance of home-care professionals when necessary.
There are few rehabilitation centers in Chile and their waiting lists are long. This program enables the quality of life of children who suffer cancer to improve and their life expectancy to increase; it also reduces the psycho-social and financial impact the illness brings to the family of the sick child.
The Fundación Nuestros Hijos was formed in 1991 by a group of parents who lived the experience of having a child suffer cancer. Since then, it has worked to offer a quality and free service for children who are sick with cancer, from families of limited means.
