In the 1930s, with an established career owing to his frescoes of the Monastery of Santa María de la Rábida and portrait of King Alfonso XIII, Daniel Vázquez Díaz introduced the motif of nudes into his works. Las bañistas [The Bathers] is the most important painting he dedicated to this subject.
The artist presented a group of six female nudes who adopt different positions across the canvas. The six women, perhaps at a swimming pool or a Turkish bath, offer themselves up to be contemplated, standing, sitting down, with their backs to the viewer, and in a foreshortened perspective as a complete manifestation of beauty. The solidity and weight of the figures are reminiscent of Paul Cézanne’s The Bathers.
