Road Safety

In rural areas, driving demands extra vigilance: the presence of animals on the road, the lack of signs and the reduced presence of emergency services are some of the main risk factors. As a result, in Spain, the majority of traffic fatalities occur on rural roads.

To reflect on and debate this situation, on April 9 we are holding the meeting Saving lives on rural roads in collaboration with the Spanish Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) and the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), in the framework of the European project “PIN – Road Safety Performance Indexes”.

At the meeting, Jenny Carson from the ETSC will present PIN Flash – Reducing deaths on rural roads, a study conducted by ETSC which reveals that, in 2022, some 10,000 people died on non-motorway rural roads in the EU, representing approximately half of all road deaths.

In addition, we will be presenting our study How to save 300 lives a year in Spain. The contribution of conventional roads to improving road safety through low-cost measures, carried out together with the Spanish Road Association, which identifies the key problems on conventional or secondary roads, quantifies and analyzes the accident rate, and offers potential solutions.

Throughout the day there will be presentations by specialists from Belgium, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Austria, who will share their approaches for putting an end to the accident rate in rural areas.

If you are interested in road safety, do not miss this meeting. We look forward to seeing you.
