Rediscovering the Mediterranean Rediscovering the Mediterranean

On the occasion of the Rediscovering the Mediterranean exhibition, we are kicking off a new conference series in which national and international experts will analyze the influence of the Mediterranean sea and culture on painting at the turn of the century.

Throughout the 19th and 20th century, the Mediterranean played an unparalleled role as a geographical space, but also as a culture, as a landscape and as an idea. Painters were not immune to the fascination that their waters inspired, and they did not want to just capture the light and the vibrant colors of the waves but also the joyfulness of a world they saw as the revival of Arcadia, a mythical time in which space and time seemed to stand still.

This conference series addressed the different ways in which the Mediterranean sea was seen by painters from France, Spain and Italy, all of whom feature in the exhibition. All with different perspectives but one thing in common, the Mediterranean as a reconciliation with the past and, simultaneously, one of the great references for the creation and development of modern art.
