Much like other contemporary creators who partook in the renewal of Spanish photography, such as Francisco Ontañón, Francesc Català-Roca, and Ramon Masats, Carlos Pérez Siquier received commissions from the Ministry of Information and Tourism during the 1960s and 70s. With Manuel Fraga Iribarne at the helm since 1962, the newly established institution found economic attractiveness in the tourist industry, which also served as a way to project an image of outward openness for the regime.
Pérez Siquier travelled the Spanish coastal roads on a scooter to capture the more complacent images that were required by the commission, but he also took others that were more interesting for him. These would eventually become his series La playa (The Beach), a counter-image of the tourism that was embellished by the official discourses.
