In Paris, in the fall of 1908, Vázquez Díaz met Danish sculptor Eva Aggerholm, a student of the Humbert Academy. They coincided at a bookshop in Montmartre and began a relationship which led to their marriage. The engagement took place in January of 1911 in Copenhagen. In 1910 the painter had exhibited his work individually for the first time in Paris and was starting to pave his way in the capital of art.
Vázquez Díaz made his first portrait of Eva Aggerholm in 1909, shortly after they met. In the following years he portrayed his wife and their son on numerous occasions, both in Madrid and in Paris.
Eva y Rafaelito de la mano [Eva and Little Rafael Holding Hands] is one of the most intimate portraits by the artist. The chessboard tiling of the floor grants the scene depth, while the pink draping, in contrast with the dark background, balances the composition.
