The Fundación Santa Marta, with the support of Fundación MAPFRE, has worked on the reconstruction of the CIBV San José Manta nursery school, one of the buildings damaged in the 2016 earthquake in Ecuador. The project has dealt with the clearing of the land and the adaptation and rebuilding of the structure as well as the painting and refurbishing of the rooms.

The nursery school is in an area seriously affected by the earthquake, the La Florita neighborhood, in the town of Manta, in the province of Manabí. One of the consequences of the catastrophe was that families were not able to take their children to nursery school, putting the jobs of the women, and the economic situation of these families, in jeopardy.

This Fundación fosters the ongoing care of the children, and education in values related to gender equality and equal rights, founded on coexistence, which is a fundamental need in societies with scarce resources where these values are polarized by poverty.

The Fundación Santa Marta was established in 2002 as part of the institutional development of the Organización de Mujeres Santa Marta. Its principal aim is to support local development in the rural communities and poor areas of Manabí.
