The “Growing up, Learning and Transcending Horizons: Emotional and Educational Support for Children and Young People Suffering from Cancer” project is carried out by La Casa de la Amistad for Children with Cancer, in Mexico City, with the collaboration of Fundación MAPFRE. This project allows children and young people with limited financial resources to access cancer treatment as well as receive specific support to overcome their illness.
Apart from providing comprehensive health care, the project carries out activities aimed at strengthening the social and educational level of the patients during their treatment so that they can cope with their situation in the best way possible. It also works with the parents, providing them with information and tools to reduce their level of stress and anxiety throughout their children’s treatment.
In short, the direct beneficiaries and their families are given access to a safe space where they can freely express their fears, but also their wishes, desires and experiences. These spaces are essential to building their own personal identity apart from the disease and above all, to knowing and exploring their abilities and skills.
The La Casa de la Amistad was founded in 1990 with the aim of offering comprehensive and free support to young people up to the age of 21 suffering from cancer and with limited financial resources. During this time, the institution has made an impact on the lives of more than 8,300 families.
