Let the competition begin!
The first semi-final of the Fundación MAPFRE Awards for Social Innovation has now taken place. On 6 June, Mexico City hosted this event in which the teams representing their projects had to give their absolute all in order to convince the judging panel that their projects deserved to reach the final.
The online mentoring that the semi-finalists received has certainly helped the teams to prepare their presentations. However, there is only room for three projects to go on to the final and the judging panel, comprised of professionals with proven experience in the social innovation sphere made the decision to choose the following initiatives:
- ECGLOVE, a finalist in the health improvement category, has designed a medical device consisting of a glove which can measure heart activity through sensors, reducing the response time from 20 minutes to three minutes. This Mexican initiative seeks to make cardiac care more efficient, allowing for quick decision-making in emergency situations and to increase a person's chances of survival.
- BKClub, finalists in the Insurance Innovation Category, have dreamed of making it possible for all their members to have the opportunity to access health, insurance, education and leisure services near where they live. Through their BKClub, mundo de oportunidades (a world of opportunities) project they encourage families and communities in Colombia to improve their standard of living through financial inclusion.
- The Caminito de la Escuela project, one of the finalists in the sustainable mobility category, seeks to transform cities by making them more accessible, safe and sustainable for children. In Mexico, two out of three children walk to school and their main risk factor is being run over. This program, through its web platform, pinpoints the areas with the greatest risk and the platform centralizes and directs reporting to the corresponding authorities in order to reach an agreement or solution.
The three finalist teams can now really get going. With the help of coaching sessions they will be preparing for their turn in the final, which will be held in Madrid in October 2019.
Meanwhile, the competition is moving forward and we will soon find out who the Brazil finalists are going to be. Stay tuned. We explain them to you here.
