Prevention has its reward
Education is the starting point for prevention. That is why the ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation works on educational programs aimed at children, teenagers and young people to help them learn how to prevent injuries in accidents in the home or on the roads. This organization has also created the ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation awards in order to recognize the work of people and institutions who spearhead awareness-raising initiatives in local communities on the importance of fostering safe environments for children.
In their 2019 edition, this prestigious award went to the Prevention Program we run in Massachusetts with the support of the Boston Children's Hospital, which seeks to place a spotlight on the importance of observing the rules as passengers, pedestrians and cyclists and in order for families to learn about risks in the home and what to do in an emergency.
The Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard University's teaching hospital, treats children on a daily basis who have been injured in incidents in the home or in road traffic accidents, where minimum safety rules were ignored. Their experience and the certainty that prevention is the only way of stopping these accidents from happening in the first place has led them to our Prevention Program. Our joint goal is to prevent children from being injured.
Our prevention experts have traveled around the state of Massachusetts in an RV in order to hold workshops and raise public awareness of the importance of working to prevent injuries. Through talks in schools during the school day and during extra-curricular activities, children and parents learn about safe behaviors in the home.
This training, publicity and awareness-raising work has led to a threefold increase in the participation of low-income families in our activities and thousands of families in Massachusetts have received helmets, child car seats and even boxes for storing medicine out of the reach of children.
We would like to thank ThinkFirst for this award, which motivates us to continue our work.
