Promoting reading in the Amazon Promoting reading in the Amazon

The main objective of the “Vaga Lume Expedition” project, which benefits 11,500 people, is to promote access to books and reading in the most isolated communities of the Amazon. This body has developed its own methodology which includes three interconnected actions: the supply of structures for community libraries, the training of volunteers as reading assistants, and incentives for the community management of the library.

With the support of Fundación MAPFRE, the Vaga Lume association distributes 5,000 new books among 100 community libraries. Thanks to this project, the reading habit is fostered in 11,500 children, young adults and adults who belong to an ethnically and geographically diverse population.

Vaga Lume is a non-profit association founded in 2001 based on the conviction that investing in people is the best strategy for transforming reality for the better. This organization is developing educational, cultural and environmental projects thanks to volunteer work in 23 municipalities of the Brazilian Amazon which extend to the states of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins, and the city of São Paulo, where its headquarters are located.
